How to Get More Leads Without Spending a Fortune on Ads

Most tradie businesses are built on referrals — and that's a solid foundation. But relying solely on word of mouth means your pipeline can dry up without warning. Here's how to build a more consistent flow of leads without burning your margin on expensive advertising.

1. Own your Google Business Profile

If you haven't claimed your free Google Business Profile, do it today. When someone searches "plumber near me" or "electrician [suburb]", Google shows a map pack of local businesses. Being in that map pack is worth thousands in advertising spend. To maximise it: add your trading area and service categories, upload real photos of your work, respond to every review, and keep hours and contact info current. Treat it as a living asset, not set-and-forget.

2. Ask for reviews — systematically

Reviews are one of your most powerful sales tools, and most businesses leave them entirely to chance. Build a simple habit: at the end of every job, when the customer is happy, ask — "I'd really appreciate it if you could leave us a quick Google review. I'll send you the link now." Then text the link before you drive away. Conversion rates on same-day requests are dramatically higher than emails a week later.

A business with 40 reviews at 4.8 stars will consistently out-convert a business with 5 reviews at 5.0 stars. Volume signals legitimacy.

3. List on trade directories

Directories like TradeHaven, HiPages, Oneflare, and ServiceSeeking put your business in front of customers actively searching for your services. Unlike ads which interrupt people, directory listings capture intent — the customer is already looking to hire. A complete, professional profile with photos, service descriptions, and reviews will dramatically outperform a bare-bones listing.

4. Build a basic website

You don't need a $10,000 website. A simple 3-page site — homepage, services, contact — is enough to establish credibility. Platforms like Squarespace or Wix cost a few hundred dollars a year. The essentials: your phone number prominently displayed, a clear description of what you do and where you work, and a gallery of completed jobs. Real photos of real work build trust far more than stock images.

5. Follow up past customers

Your existing customers are your warmest leads. A simple text or email once or twice a year — "Hey, just checking in — hope the hot water system is going well. Let us know if you need anything" — keeps you front of mind at zero cost. Keep a simple spreadsheet of customers and last contact date. Even reaching out to 20 past customers per month can generate meaningful work.

Low-cost lead generation checklist:

6. Use your vehicle as a billboard

Vehicle signage is massively underused in the trades. A clean van or ute with your business name, logo, phone number, and trade is a mobile billboard that works 24/7 in your local area. Basic vinyl signs or magnetic panels cost a few hundred dollars and can generate leads for years. If a potential customer sees your van parked outside a neighbour's house three times, they'll remember you when they need a tradie.

7. Be present where your customers are

Local Facebook groups, Nextdoor, and community forums are full of people asking for tradie recommendations. You don't need to advertise — just be a genuine, helpful presence. Answer questions about your trade, provide honest advice, and let people know you're available when they ask for recommendations. This kind of trust-building compounds over time, and the tradies who are consistently busy in any given suburb have usually earned it through years of visible local presence.
